Gore Vidal has been a quasi-public figure for some time, and a notably liberal one at that. So I was surprised to see him say the following:"We?ll have a military dictatorship fairly soon, on the basis that nobody else can hold everything together."On Obama: "Dreadfully. I was hopeful. He was the most intelligent person we?ve had in that position for a long time. But he?s inexperienced. He has a total inability to understand military matters. He?s acting as if Afghanistan is the magic talisman: solve that and you solve terrorism."Alas, I'm not sure how much stock we should put in Vidal's words to begin with. Perhaps his thoughts aren't based on his view from the center-left, but instead from his view on the uber-left. He continues with this diatribe:"Obama believes the Republican Party is a party when in fact it?s a mindset, like Hitler Youth, based on hatred ? religious hatred, racial hatred. Gore Vidal's a Leftist fool. His writing is just a reflection of the rest of the Left (extreme and moderate…if there is such a thing as moderate Left) losing faith in Obama. One good thing, you know it must be getting bad when even they are starting to complain about him and see him for what he is…an inexperienced hack.

I agree that Gore Vidal is a flake. One thing though, if someone so far left is saying a dictatorship would not be such a bad thing, how many on the post modernist side of the political spectrum are thinking it? Of course, it would only be for our own good. I am thinking here of the kind of soft totalitarianism that you see in Britain not Stalinist dictatorship. We are already hearing rumblings about the good of the many despite the fact that this country was founded to uphold individual liberties.
