I am wondering….would you say that the First Great Awakening had more significance in its religious impact or its political impact? One one hand, the spiritualism that grew from it may have influenced the seeds of the entire nation, thereby setting America on a different course than what it may have gone through otherwise. As such, it could have had a religious influence which continues with us in one form or another today. On the other hand, its political impact by way of the American Revolution has been mentioned before and really solidified the American ethos or way of life as being separate from that of England. Of course I conjecture a bit with these two points….but do you think it was one or the other?
My POV; while the religious issue is large the grassroots nature is the key… all the colonies and most everyone was on the same page about something for the first time. Connections made were the beginnings o connections that would flesh out later as committees of correspondence. The challenge to church status quo doesn't take much pushing to become challenge to political status quo a huge step toward revolution (or evolution if you will)… the connections and the fervor are the key to it all.
It sounds like you opted for a “third” choice which I hadn't included….a “social” or “cultural” significance. Interesting. Perhaps I should have added it as well to my list. I should have thought of it.
