If you need the links I'll try to find them, but is anyone following this story. It is ridiculous! According to the police report, the arresting officer had every reason to arrest the professor. He was acting beligerant and he was not allowing the police to continue with their investigation. A woman called the police to report a breakin at the professor's house. When the cops arrived, the professor immediately accused them of racial profiling (the police were only questioning if he was alone in the house). Why is this a problem? BECAUSE OBAMA HAS TURNED IT INTO A RACE ISSUE even though it is not. Obama, the "intelligent" president also called the cops stupid. Even if he disagreed, couldn't he have more diplomatic about it? Better yet, maybe he could have waited until all the facts were in. I'm glad the cop isn't giving in to pressure and is refusing to apologize for something he doesn't have to apologize for.
I was surprised that Obama weighted in on the subject. I thought he would have been more diplomatic about it, realizing that he shouldn't comment on something which was obviously fact-specific and very local. Then again, the guy who got arrested was a buddy of his, so maybe that's why he did it. I can understand the guy getting mad about a cop thinking he was a burglar in his own house - I think I would feel a bit perturbed about it at first, especially if I was having a bad day and had just gotten home from a trip to find my door broken. But it sounds like he immediately became a "victim" and turned it into a racial issue when the cop was just doing his job. Obama's now put in a hot spot - do you stand with your own racial support, or do you stand with law enforcement? He shouldn't have opened his mouth publicly on this one, IMO.
I am not surprised that this guy is playing the race card. That is how the left works. What I am surprised about is why this guy was arguing with the cops in the first place. I think I would be thankful that the police responded so quickly to a reported burglary. It looks to me like the cops were doing what they are supposed to do, which is protect the public.I am not even sorry that this clown apparently got his feelings hurt. If I were the Cambridge police his house would go on a do not respond list. I also think it is great that the cop refuses to apologize for doing his job. Some of these Ivory Tower liberals need a dose of reality once in awhile. As to Obama, he should have kept his mouth shut and absent that should have said something along the lines of we will see what the investigation shows. He cant do that though, because he is just as divisive as any NAACP member. Race is part of what got him elected, remember he carried something like 90% of the black vote. He has also made a point of highlighting what he calls the sour state of race relations in America. Of course he will jump to conclusions and come down squarely on the side of HIS race every time. Remember, in modern America only whites can be racists, everybody else is just proud of their heritage.
Asking a person found at an alleged break-in to ID himself is logical… establishes a right to be there at all.Asking if one is the only person on the premises (which Gates is said to have replied "None of your business!") ...may seem silly to the homeowner but is logical as well... two persons were reported; where is the other? Or... is the other holding the first (Gates) hostage? Or... as Crowley mentioned; are there two persons on the premises that the homeowner knows nothing about? Why wouldn't Crowley follow Gates when he went to get ID? Gates may have been the bad guy and going for a wapon or the other BG... DUH!I can see Gates being bummed out by the whole stuck door at the end of a tired and cranky day but to hassle a cop over checking on his home security is a bit over the top. [Note to Prof. and Pres.: Stupid is as stupid does.]
I saw that piece on Drudge and got a laugh. I wonder what point the journalist was trying to make with that. The guy they share a link to is a 5th century warlord. I would hardly call that related except in the thinnest possible way. The headline makes it sound like they were 3rd or 4th cousins. Its kind of like a clan member saying he has black friends too. Or is the journalist trying to say that Gates is not really black? If that is the case then what does that make Obama?
I always thought being Irish was the same as being black. To listen to some people whine about the way the Irish have been mistreated, it certainly gives that impression. I guess the difference is the Irish complain about being mistreated but did not expect handouts and so rolled up their sleeves and proceeded to bootstrap themselves rather than wait for the government or society to pay them back or right the wrongs. That is why I respect the Irish.BTW, I am Irish on my Grandmothers side before I get accused of something. I feel perfectly content to talk about my own heritage and that of others and dont fear offending people. Often taking offense means that something that was said hit home.
Defensiveness is indeed the last abstion of the small minded
, I think thats a quote but if not I want to make it one and I will take the credit for it.
The great thing about being Irish is that you can claim so many others as your relatives. I sometimes tell people I'm of Irish nobility because my mom's maiden name was O'Brien, which is traced back to the High King Brian Boru (then again, how many O'Briens in the world do you know?). Actually – I'm not sure if I mentioned this here before – but title to an Irish castle was offered to my uncle a few decades ago. He passed (would have had to pay the back taxes) and it was bought and turned into a hotel. Here are some photos:
