I want to see Inglorious Basterds but only for entertainment value because I certainly dont think Tarantino will produce anything even remotely historically illuminating. Although he does generally make good movies.

Indeed, from what I understand it's complete historical fiction - a "fantasy" movie that borrows some historical elements, and that's it. I read an American review that ripped the movie and gave it either 1/2 or 1 star. Meanwhile, the German critics apparently love it. That bothers me about modern Germans....shouldn't liberal, peace-loving people deplore violent depictions in movies? Could it be that it's justified here for them because it involves Hitler and the Nazis on the receiving end of the pain? I get the feeling that modern Germans continue to suffer from a major guilt complex over WWII and that they try to overcompensate for it today by going against their country's troubled past.

Funny you should mention that. I attended a German-American Partnership conference in Berlin last week that was sponsored by the German Military. That point came up in discussion and the comment was made in the context of military recruiting that Germans are just not proud to be Germans any more, that Germans are only allowed to be proud of being German when the World cup, Olympics, or some other sporting event happens. The German military guys we were with deplored that state of affairs as much as I do, I see some similarities between Germany and America in that respect, only self-condemnation is not quite so fashionable in the US yet. That too is coming to listen to Obama's standard speech to foriegn audiences. Apparently everything good about America comes from minorities and everything bad is whitey's fault despite what the historical truth may be. That is the same kind of thinking that is prevalent in the German, indeed, European post-modernists as well as the ones in America.
