In light of the “What is it?” game, I have here another image. All you know about this public domain image is the time period and the country (given the fact that it's in the “Late Nineteenth Century America” board). What significant thing does this scene depict?
It does look victorian and they are too well drssed for the draft riots. Is it the first black friday?
First black Friday? What reference is that for?
Google black friday or maybe its on Wikipedia. It was actually a joke. 😀 You know when you have to explain them……
Well, the Wikipedia Black FridayBlack Friday[/wiki] states about a dozen “Black Fridays”, three of which fall in the latter half of the 19th Century (none of them are it). The most common use for “Black Friday” in my mind is the date after Thansgiving when companies are finally supposed to be operating “in the black” for the calendar year. Hint: think 1880s.
The one after thanksgiving was theone I was thinking of. Is it political? I was thinking maybe a convention or rally turned bad.
Well? Have you forgotten Phid? we're still waiting.
Here is another image that was probably in the same series (looks like the same artist). It describes the same event.
The assassination of James Garfield. It's the only thing I can think of.
You guessed right. Congratulations! You can see more about the pics below:http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:AssasinationPresGarfield.JPGhttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Garfield_assassination_engraving.jpg
I didnt get the sense of it in the first pic but the next one was more obvious.
Heres another pretty dramatic sketch from Harpers Weekly, any ideas?
Ok, I guess it didnt upload, what did I do wrong?
Did you use the “attachment” feature below the posting box? Also, the image has to be less than 260 kb….if you can't get it that size I can tweak it…
