KeymasterLet's play a game now. When you see a popular phrase from history used in a news story today, link to it here. For example, I just found this one:
"The dye has been cast in this election cycle - Democrats and their liberal progressive socialist allies will continue to play the race card when it is politically expedient," West said.

ParticipantThis is not a phrase but perhaps a misuse of history. This quote comes from a NYT article about the proposed graphic warnign labels on cigarettes.
With Wednesday?s announcement, the United States ? whose first European settlements in the 17th century helped to create and feed a global tobacco addiction ? edged a step closer to joining those nations? efforts to reduce the centuries-old epidemic of tobacco-related deaths.
I particulkarly like how the implication is made that the spread of smoking is directly realated and an intimate part of the reason for settling the Americas. The full article is here.

ParticipantI ran across another historical reference in contemporary media. It is an opinion piece that opens with a discussion of the origin of the word Draconian. It is actually a pretty good way of opening the piece. I would say that is the proper way to use history in contemporary reporting.

KeymasterInteresting. "It is said that Draco himself, when asked why he had fixed the punishment of death for most offenses, answered that he considered these lesser crimes to deserve it, and he had no greater punishment for more important ones."I am surprised Draco wouldn't have thought that something else, like having one's family killed for one's own serious crimes, would have been a punishment greater than death.

ParticipantI think that in the end personal extinction is a much more frightening prospect than just about anything else.

About your source: wasn't West charged with violating articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice? Or processed through an Article 32 hearing in November 2003? Didn't he accept the judgment and retired with full benefits in the summer of 2004?http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/12/12/sprj.nirq.west.ruling/index.html Probably a mistake ;D

Should we start a discussion about what West did and whether he was right or wrong? I am more than willing to go there as I would assume a few others on this forum are as well. Of course, I may be off base in thinking what you guys are getting at, in which case, I will stand back.
