ModeratorKind of tongue in cheek, but kinda serious here too.History is great for those with ADD. I'm still mainly focusing on Greek and Roman history, but man, other areas are beginning to get my attention. US history and WWI & WWII are starting to become really interesting to me.Sure glad Grad school (if I decide to go) is still a ways off!

KeymasterYes, that is the problem of the student of history. There are too many areas of history that are intriguing, and in the end you need to pick just one. You can eventually branch out along the way, but most of your focus will be on your area of specialization.

ParticipantMan I so can relate ski… I must have ADD (my wife says I do)… I started off with the Civil War, and while that is still my bread and butter I have found so many other interesting and intriguing things in even just American history... get world history involved and it's like being a kid at the candy store!!I'm in the same boat, grad school is a ways off, but I know the Civil War will be my focus...I love being a history geek! Good stuff! ;D

ParticipantWWI is fascinating. I am seriously thinking about trying to get a graduate certificate in WWI studies once my MA is finished and out of the way.

ModeratorI'm seriously thinking of changing my major from history to military history. And with AMUs reputation in military history, it's very tempting.

That is what I got my BA in. The question I have run into is where do you go from there? I decided to get my MA in European History to expose myself to something other than campaign and operational art type stuff. I am still a military historian at heart but reading and becoming familiar with things other than military has actually broadened my horizon and made me see some military history things in a different light. In some ways modern historians are correct in that military affairs must be seen in a much broader context than just just army a fought army b this way and defeated them. There are societal factors at work that make some armies better than others beyond pure operational, technological, and doctrinal aspects.

Wouldn't this be more confining to your future prospects? I imagine this limits you quite a bit in terms of the kinds of historical material you would study, and might affect the kinds of graduate programs that you could apply to. Just a thought.

ParticipantI made it a point to be well versed in as many areas as I could, but with the passage of time, it fades. Sucks to be out of school right now.
