See the attached image. It's a public domain political cartoon from 1896. Numerous issues surrounding a common theme. My question – who here can explain the issues going on? What you have here is a group of kids assembling for war. One sign says “Down wit Ingland dey dont know wot deys up aginst b'gee”…another says “We dont know venezuela but we are wit him troo tick & troo tin all right”…. Image title says “The War Scare in Hogan's Alley”. So...anyone know the background issue(s) at hand?
Yes, it does appear to be one of the Yellow Kid panels. One of the signs a kid is holding also says “Down wit Spane – Fitzsimmons is wit us”….anyone know which Fitzsimmons this refers to?
I think Fitzsimmons was the heavyweight boxing champion but not sureI checked and Robert Fitzsimmons was the first triple title holder in boxinghttp://www.fitzsimmons.co.nz/main.html
Ah, that would make sense if the kids are getting ready for a fight. The site you linked to stated this:
Who will ever forget Fitz's win over James J Corbett at Carson City, Nevada, in 1897? It is still one of the greatest of all fights, a ring classic, and was watched by such famous personalities as Bat Masterton, Wyatt Earp and some of the wealthiest men in America.
If the cartoon was done in 1896 then this would coincide with the time when Fitzsimmons was perhaps at his zenith.
