When it became a large news story a week or so ago I didn't really know what the big deal was, and I certainly didn't know why people would be holding vigils for the dead teenager in different cities. A tragedy, sure, but deaths happen all over the place and they go by unnoticed by the national media. Why was this one so important? As it has been unraveling, I see that it is because it's similar to a cultural Vietnam; it is an event which spurs a standoff between left and right, even though the underlying event isn't really related to partisan politics. The way I see it, the left has greatly politicized the shooting while accusing the right of doing it. We've had commentators on MSNBC imply that the Republican candidates, and even Jeb Bush, were at least partially at fault for what went on. I know - it is absurd to even think of making such an argument, even more absurd to voice such an opinion over the airwaves. We've also had many liberal black politicians condemning the shooter, making up stories, etc., despite the fact that they do not know all the facts of the case. As for the media, there may be an effort by them to stoke the flames. This is the first time I have heard a person be called a "white hispanic". Was this done to impress upon the mind of people that this was a "white on black" crime? Strangely, one never hears of Obama being called a "black white man".In the end, I'm afraid the rule of law may suffer. This case needs to be examined by investigators and decided by the courts - NOT the media, NOT the activists, NOT political figures. As it stands, it seems that the tension is at a boiling point.
skiguyModeratorI feel bad for the family, but I also feel bad for the other families of murder victims. I have been questioning why so much attention has been paid to this. Obama's comment about Trayvon could be his son was thoughtless. The Left's reactionary reporting and race baiting is just disgusting. I think anyone with even a little common sense can see through this political manipulation of a tragic incident.I still think if Zimmerman did something wrong, he'd be in jail now. Obviously there is WAY more to the story than what the general public knows.
scout1067ParticipantI quit paying attention when Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton got in on it. It is pure race baiting now. I am following my usual reaction when the left gets involved. This case has shades of Tawana Brawley written all over it.From what I know the Zimmerman guy is and was an idiot but from the supposed facts I have read he probably did not murder the kid. He probably did not need to use deadly force, but he was also probably legally justified in doing so.
