I'm posting this here, but am not sure if this is specific to Greece.Does anyone know first of all what IG means, and if so, what is the difference between IG I and IG II when it comes to inscriptions.See here for an example of what I'm referrring to.(this might be a question for a Greek linguist or language tutor. Hmmm, I think I know one ;D )

That's a great website, wally! But I'll have to look at it better when I get home, I can't find any definitions of IG other than it's Attic Greek. I wonder if it has to do with the date it was inscribed or location found.

You might email one of the profs at Providence University and get your answer there.

I read that and did not see what I was asking. BTW, I think I am wrong about IG being only Attic Greek. The Spartan inscriptions (usually Doric dialect) are labelled IG V.

Ski, this is actually a very good way to get an "in" with the people in the field you hope to get into.
True, but having a tutor who is treasurer of the Classical Association of N. Eng., invited me to their spring meeting, and will introduce me to “all the professors” might be a better way! ;D
But think about if at that meeting one of the professors comes up to you and says…”excuse me sir, do I know you from somewhere? You look very familiar”, lol.
I'd rather they say, “excuse me, sir, I've heard good things about you from your tutor. If you need a letter of recommendation to get into Brown's grad school, feel free to contact me. As head of the Classical history department, I might have some pull”All I know is I need to learn how to turn up my schmooze button full volume!
According to the tutor the I, II, III, etc. are geographical regions. The reason Attic Greek incsriptions are I, II (and more) is because it is so prevalent. Doric inscriptions (mainly the region of Sparta) is only V because there is not much volume in writing. Latin inscriptions are the same, execpt it does not begin with IG.
