The current military engagement between Israel and Hezbollah is not just a war of two peoples, it is a war of two ideologies–Zionism and Islamic Fundamentalism. Zionism is the ideology that originated from the desire to create a homeland for the Jews. Zionism's founding is traditionally credited to Theodore Herzl toward the end of the 19th-century. Zionism at its core, is the heart and soul of what it means to be Jewish and an Israeli. Islamic Fundamentalism, however, is a radicalized perversion of mainstream Islam that seeks to reconstruct Islam's supreme government the Khalifa or Caliphate. The Khalifa existed during the Golden Age of Islam during the Middle and High Middle Ages. The Islamic Khalifa stretched from the Caucus Mountains in Central Asia across the Mahgreb of Northern Africa to the Pyrenee Mountains of Iberia and across the Hellespont into the Balkan Penninsula. Today, the influence of Islam remains in much of these lands and even stretches into Southeast Asia including Indonesia. Here is a map of the Islamic World:On the one hand, Zionism is struggling to maintain the tiny nation of Israel (a nation roughly the size of New Jersey), and Islamic Fundamentalism is trying to exert its influence throughout the Muslim World and beyond which already includes nearly 1.2 billion people and a third of the world's landmass. The disproportionality of this conflict geographically illustrates the dire seriousness facing the world today if the Islamic Fundamentalists are not checked. The world's oil supply and strategic waterways all will be controlled by radical Muslim elements if nothing is done to moderate the movement away from its rampant bellicosity. To date, only the United States, Great Britain, and tiny Israel have any serious intentions of combatting the spread of this hate inspired contagion. Radical Islamic Fundamentalism is fueled only by hate--hatred of non Muslims, moderate secular leadership, and Western capitalist culture. For Islamic Fundamentalists, the postmodern Western world is anathema to their world view as it is an ideology that is not too different from what was practiced a millennia ago. To them, what Osama bin Laden, Sheik Nasrallah, al-Zawahiri, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are preaching today is no different than what Amr ibn al-As, Abu Bakr, Suleiman the Magnificiant, and Mehmet II espoused hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Radical Islam has a long memory. The arguments of the distant past still hold true today. Unfortunately the lingering hatred does as well. Herein lies the great downfall of Islam, that is it is stuck in the past and refuses to assimilate into a modern world. While the rest of the world presses on into new uncharted territory, the Islamic World is left further and further behind and more alienated. For example, while the Israelis hope to build a united Middle East similar to the European Union, its neighbors are still fighting ancient battles trying to recapture the glory of a distant memory. The end result is the Muslims of the Middle East remain in abject poverty and slaves of authoritarian regimes. As the IDF pushes ever deeper into Lebanon, the hopes of pulling the Muslim World out of its sad plight is diminishing. With every Israeli misplaced bomb that kills innocent civilians, the greater the intensity the Muslim hatred will become for the Israelis. As tensions mount and the fighting escalates, America's dream of bringing democracy to nations like Iraq fades. In fact, American officials are grumbling that Iraq may be on the verge of a civil war because of the fighting in Lebanon. Hezbollah, once a marginalized terror proxy militia of Iran, is now quickly becoming the front line heroes in the great struggle against Israel and the United States. Even though Israel is significantly degrading Hezbollah militarily, they are at the same time giving Hezbollah the political status in Lebanon that it otherwise would never have had. So in this respect, Hezbollah may actually be winning as the Lebanese people are increasingly looking to Hezbollah as their defenders. The consequences of this new political dynamic may come back to haunt Israel down the road. If there wasn't a true Axis of Evil, there is now, and the links in the chain start in Beirut and end in Tehran. What we may be witnessing is the opening shots of the Third World War.
What you have written here is a very scary scenario. But third world war? Violence in the middle east is nothing new. War in the middle east is nothing new. Do you think that because we are now so much more a global society that this new war will have more of an effect on the rest of the world that is watching? Maybe Globalazation is not such a good thing.

I think the Global War on Terrorism is the catalyst that might be pushing us toward a Third World War. Globalism is not helping matters very much either. I don't think the Radical Islamic elements are going to see reason so we'll just have to see what happens next.
When society uses the word radical in connection with a group, then you can bet reason is something they no nothing about.
Although that is something that some people hope you to think; that word can also be used merely to paint a person or a group into a corner as a way of marginalizing particular views. I can assure you that I would be considered "radical" by some camps.

Oh yes, we all would be considered radical by someone. I gues when I made the comment I was thinking specifically of those who use nothing but violence to get their point across. When all you know is violence, then I consider that radical to say the least.
The thing we need to be watching is how motivated this new generation of Islamic Fundamentalists are in pushing their worldview (weltanschauung) on the secular and moderate Arab nations.? My guess is we are witnessing the most radical generation of Islamic Fundamentalists ever. 🙁
It is just the latest chapter in a war for domination that has been going on since the First Crusade in the Early Middle Ages. The principle problem is that the world is shrinking on a daily basis while humanity's ability to kill has increased exponentially. The secondary problem is that mankind as a species has not evolved enough to replace war and mayhem with rational discussion leading to a compromise that both sides can live with. Our best hope is that the silent majority on both sides, those people that just want to live their lives in peace and harmony so they can get on with enjoying it, will somehow be able to contain the lunatic fringe. The problem is that too often it is the lunatic fringe who are in charge. Sometimes I become convinced that it is a race to see what will wipe out mankind first – nuclear armageddon or irreversible climate change triggered by runaway pollution. And before you scoff too much, remember that dinosaurs ruled for 65,000,000 years before they were wiped out virtually overnight and that their demise was only one of several instances of virtual global annihalation of much of the world's living creatures. Mankind is a relative newcomer and we are still, in many ways, in our infancy. Hopefully we won't committ global suicide due to our collective immaturity.

You can say I'm pesimistic, but they never will learn to reason with one another. They have had thousands of years and the world has done nothing but get more violent.

They MIGHT learn to get along with each other but I'm not optimistic. We don't have any kids so my hope is that it all doesn't go up in smoke before my wife and I are dead. I figure that if the people who HAVE kids are too stupid to figure out that unless they get it together their kids' future is looking fairly grim, then why should I worry.
The Christians hate the Muslims, the Muslims hate the Christians, the west hates the east and the east hates the west. How can one be optimistic with so much hate in the world? I am not sure about Donalds comments about WW3, but I dont think the violence will end anytime soon, anyone who is famieler with history can see all man has done in his history is fight, lie, cheat, steal and enslave one another. Whats going on in Israel is nothing new, of course we all know that.
I was watching the news today and started thinking about this thread. It seems Israel may be threatening to take out Iran's Nuclear facilities and the thought is if that happens then the middle east will become involved in a full blown war. What do you think will happen if this comes about? How will it change the U.S. policy in Iraq? What do you think the U.S.'s involvement should be? And, God forbid, Israel resorts to it's nuclear arsenal against Iran what then?
I don't want to make speculations just yet. My first inclination would be that if Israel does attack Iran pre-emptively, it will be a crippling blow that will significantly degrade Iran's military capabilities and thus reduce their ability to influence the region….at least for a few years anyway. Iran will still have its terror networks at its disposal to use in retaliation, but the Ayatollahs will not allow Ahmadinejad to hurl the region into a catastrophic war without some serious help from either Russia or China. So Iran will have to weigh its choices and if no help is in the wings, they will have to suffer the humiliation and Ahmadinejad will take the fall for it.
I heard on the news that it was us (the US) who leaked this to the press, so that they won't do this. I hope they don't, it's too soon. Let the sanctions take effect, the citizens of Iran will pressure the regime to stop. If they don't stop there will be an uprising, then….who knows.
I sincerely hope that Israel doesn't try anything stupid like this. My take on Israel is perhaps a bit different from some others of you. It seems to me that the state of Israel is probably a result – at least to some degree – of the after effects of World War II. I believe that Britain played a prominent role in its establishment. While I don't side with terrorists who bomb Israelis, I find if problematic that Israel's fate seems to be intertwined with that of the United States. The problem is that the United States does not control the policies implemented by Israel, but we face the retaliation against it. Further fighting is not the answer. World War III is not upon us. We need to find any way to prevent war from breaking out as it is a war that we should not want to fight. Is war inevitable? Sometimes it seems like it as Islamofascists seem to want to stop at nothing. However, we should hope and pray that more moderate forces will prevail within the Islamic community. Liberalism in the United States and around the world actually aids Islamofascism, so we are already fighting a war on an ideological front from within.
