Has anybody seen this story? I have never been to Ponpeii but it is on my list of places I want to visit. I would have guessed the caretakers of the site would be constantly evaluating the structural soundness of the buildings there; I guess not. According to the article it sounds like they lack the funds to really take care of the place.
The entire town has not been fully excavated, even though it was first discovered around 1738. That tells us that things don't always move as fast as they should. When I first saw the headline a few days ago, I thought for a moment that one of the more famous patrician domae may have collapsed, which would have been an even greater historical tragedy (IMO). Still, there's something to be said for a building that was built 2000+ years ago, survived a volcano and hordes of modern tourists, and managed to stay up this long.
You have a point, I just wonder how much it would cost to do a structural survey of the excavated buildings and put in the bracing required to keep something like that from happening.
