ModeratorY'all can use this for ammo in your next debate with a global warming alarmist.Exclusive: No ice at the North Pole Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate changeOH NO!!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!Oh, wait a minuteArctic Volcanoes Found Active at Unprecedented Depths
"The dispersal of the particles does not necessarily indicate that the eruptions were highly energetic, only that the eruption heated the surrounding seawater and the rising plume of heated water carried the lava fragments upwards where currents could disperse them," Clague said.

KeymasterIndeed, the science is confusing, isn't it? This is why I've regularly taken the position that the earth is such a complexity that when we add solar influences on it there is really no way we can know with great certainty what is going on. This is the same with all science, but less complex systems are easier to understand. It may or may not be the case that "man-made climate change" is going on but I don't see how we can be very certain in our understanding if we haven't even defined all the variables involved. So a few years ago when I heard certain people claim that the issue of global warming was "closed" and not up for further debate I couldn't but help think that they were trying to pull the greatest political stunt - stifle discussion about scientific inquiry which one would think naturally demands discussion (i.e. continued scientific inquiry).

Wholeheartedly agree with you. GW is no longer science, now it is politics with a thin, very thin, scientific mantle.

ModeratorThis week's discussion assignment is to pick any current event as related to geography. One student chose AGW and I tried to counter every point he made. He's not one I would consider a Leftist, but he shows an interest in environmetalism and did take the “caused by man” side. Well, the teacher almost had to referee the discussion. I wasn't offensive, but I apologized nonetheless. I did make it clear that this is a big issue with me and will not stop talking about it and will continue to defend my position. So I guess there are environmentalists and Liberals in the military (most of the students in this school are in the military). What's up with that?!?

KeymasterI think there are people who are not necessarily “liberals” or even big environmentalists who subscribe to AGW. It's framed as a “do or die” issue so non-partisan people are also going to believe in it. Maybe the guy's one of these non-leftist types.

ModeratorThere's quite a few big-government types, though. It took me a while to grasp the concept of free markets and capitalism, so maybe these “kids” will eventually get it.

ParticipantNice piece in how the GW crowd is like John Kerry. Global Warming Alarmists Flip-Flop On Snowfall Yet they will keep yammering on about alternative energy and crappy dim lightbulbs that contain hazardous chemicals but use less electricity, as though if everyone starts riding a bike the Mammoths and sabre-tooths will come back from extinction or something. There main point I think is that humanity is evil and we should just commit collective suicide so the chimpanzees and lovable orangutangs can have the planet. they would be much better stewards of Gaia than us anyway, they are already noble savages.

ModeratorBut I thought the polar icecaps were melting. Can't wait to see how they spin this one. But then again, they may just ignore it like they do all other scientific evidence that debunks their theory.Antarctic ice sheet built 'bottom-up'

That is the building block behind the whole movement; spinning the facts and excoriating and demonizing opponents.
