Has anybody ever read anything about the Makin Raid?I just got lost in the internet and ran across a site about the raid. I was aware of the raid and the lack of success in it's outcome. I was not aware however that 30 men were unaccounted for after the raid because the 18 known KIAs and 12 MIAs were left on the island. Of the MIAs 9 were captured by the Japanese, taken to Kwajalein, and executed. The 18 KIAs and one MIA were buried in a mass grave by the natives and their remains were not recovered until 1999 when a family member of one of the fallen found a native who had helped bury the bodies. The remains were recovered and in 2001 13 were interred at Arlington and 6 were buried by the families. There are still 2 men missing from the battle and DoD has no clue what happened to them. The assumption is that they were lost at sea while trying to return to the submarines that took them on the raid.It is an interesting story of a raid that was only notable because it was the Raiders first action and the first time submarines were used to deliver a raiding party to an enemy beach.
No, I ran across the reference when looking up Louis Zamperini's story.
