What do you all think of the effect has been when that cup of coffee fell on that lady years back? Remember the case? Basically what happened was a lady ordered coffee at the drive through at McDonalds, and when it was given to her, it somehow spilled onto her lap. The coffee was kept at such a high temperature that it scalded her body, I believe causing a lot of medical bills. She sued nad was awarded some lucrative sum.I'm not asking really what the effect has been on litigation, but rather what the effect has been on the public consciousness in regard to litigation.
I think it created an era of cynicism and scorn for our legal system due to all the copycat frivilous lawsuits that followed. It was another contributing factor to the death of Reason. 🙁
Yeah from what I understand it got people to start thinking that they coudl also “win big” with personal injury suits. Unfortunately, I don't think that people win as much as they think they can. Insurance companies see to it that they don't win big.

I whole heartedly agree. A friend of mine as a joke once said to his wife that they were only one good lawsuit away from financial independance. It was a joke, but it does reflect an underlying attitude of get rich quick regardless of who suffers.

Not sure if this is what you're asking, Phid, but I think it changed the perspective of personal responsibility. You can now sue others for your own mistake. Did this have any effect on legal decisions concerning the tobacco industry? You choose to smoke, but you can sue them when you get cancer? I know there's more to it than that, but that's how the average person sees it I think.
Smoke, sue use a gun, sue eat to much and get fat, sue drink to much alcohol and get behind the wheel. sue…. Doesnt say much for civil litigation. People need to be responsible for their own actions, their not held accountable…. thats why society is in the mess it's in and the prisons are so full.
