the Copyright for Mein Kampf Runs out in 3 years and now the state of Bavaria, which holds it, is planning on releasing an annotated version in hopes of getting out in front of the neo Nazis when the work hits the public domain. Right now, the book is not illegal in Germany but copies are very hard to come by. Most of my German friends are amazed when they find out I have a copy.
Why would it be very hard to come by if it is not illegal? Is it simply the taboo of a German having a copy (I'm guessing you get a free pass since you belong to the “liberators)? While I can understand the desire to prevent the simmering of Neo-Nazi feelings and prevent a repeat of history - even on a small scale - I think it's a risky endeavor for the state to get involved in matters like this.
It is hard to come by because many copies were confiscated after world war two. And since the war the state of Bavaria has refused to let it be published. I have a copy, but I bought that in the states in high school. The only copies I've seen here in Germany are old ones that date to the 1930s.
