KeymasterAs you may know Mel Gibson's movie about the Maya is coming out later this year. So far it looks like it might be vintage Mel….pretty darn good:http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117953677.html?categoryid=1&cs=1

ParticipantWell I certainly dont agree with his comments of some months ago, but that is his personal life. I will go see this movie and judge it on its own merits. If this movie is as good as the Passion I wonder down the road if he keeps making films of this magnitude where he will stand with some of the other great Directors of the past (my personal favorite is John Ford).

KeymasterWell remember he did direct (and act in) Braveheart, which won Best Picture in 1995 or 1996. That was one of my favorite, if not the favorite, movies of all time. So we know he can direct quite well.

Participanttrue. He and Eastwood have done quite well as directors. Were there any actor/directors in the golden age of Holywood? I cant seem to think of any.

ParticipantHas anyone gone to see it yet? I wanted to go this last wekend but wasnt able. I hear more and more thats it's very graphic in its depictions of the sacrifices.

Yeah but they said similar things about Passion of the Christ, which I didn't think was so much the case. I get the feeling that Hollywood critics curiously tend to become violence-sensitive when it comes to Mel Gibson movies.

ParticipantTrue. It was sad that Passion didnt get the recognition from the industry it deserved, but in the end the people spoke and thats what counts.

ParticipantWell I went and saw the movie. It wasnt bad, the only disapointment is that you really dont learn anything about the Mayans. Theres no plot, it's just one long chase scene. The blood wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, not as gory as Braveheart, but still theres a lot. But not unrealisitic concerning the subject matter. This movie should have dealt with the downfall of the Mayans and the spanish contribution to that down fall. Considering the talent Mel Gibson has this movie could have been a lot better.

KeymasterInteresting, although I have heard it praised more highly by film critics.

ParticipantI'm not saying it's a bad movie, it just didnt go the direction I had hoped. But thats just the history lover in me. It is well made.
