Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to the music of the depression era? Particularly interested in the song about brother can you spare a dime.
You might want a book like this:http://www.amazon.com/American-History-Song-Lyrics-1900/dp/0595193315/sr=8-4/qid=1160850722/ref=sr_1_4/104-5429206-6551138?ie=UTF8&s=booksIt has lyrics of songs from 1900 to 1945 covering a lot of topics.
Thanks, looks very interesting, something that history teachers may find useful as a supliment to their curriculum.I remember my older brother brought home an old poetry book that was being trown out from the high school lirary because it was so old. The poems were arranged by era, the best in my opinion being from the civil war. Several of them influence me to this day. One, about the confederate flag ended, "...for it's people's hopes have fled."
Try looking up Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie. Also if you want good civil war era music Get Bobby Horton.
I was interested in some of the music in this era too. That book seems interesting, I might have to check it out.
You can`t go wrong with Woody Guthrie. The Sons of the Pioneers, and the Carter Family were all preforming thru the 30s at rodeos and small out of the way places. Roy Rodgers was still with the Pioneers in the 30s. The Carter family was a staple of old country life in the 30s.Enjoy some of these greats.
Uncle Dave Macon is another good one.
