I watched The Sum of All Fears last weekend on dvd. I hadn't seen it since I saw it in the theater. It was perhaps better the second time around. In the beginning of the movie it mentions how in the Israeli war against Egypt and Syria (?) in the 1960s, Israel was getting close to being overrun by ground forces. They had a single jet loaded with a nuclear bomb on standby just in case. In the movie the jet gets shot down and this forms the beginning point for the movie's plot. a) Does anyone know if this is true?b) When did Israel get nuclear secrets from the U.S. government?
In 1956 France helped Israel build a nuclear reactor. In the 50's and 60's Britain shipped materials needed to facilitate that reactor and weapons as well. So it seems that it was France and Britain that got that program of the ground. Nixon evidently tried to keep Israel from going public with it and it wasnt exposed until 1986.
Interesting. Then I wonder a) why Islamic militants don't direct their anger at France or Britain as they do against the U.S. for their help of Israel, and b) how did France get nuclear power back in the 1950s?

1) Because they know the French will just give up and surrender in like 1/2 an hour, so why bother. And, 2) what about the subway bombings in London? That's directed anger. No?
