Last Friday my daughter gave me a packet of old letters that my mother had given her. All were from the late 1800s except one, It was addressed to my G-G Grandmother, Caroline McGeehee Parham, from her brother in Arkansas. The stamp is a 5 cent Confederate Postage stamp with a likeness of Jefferson Davis on it. The letter and envelope are in great shape with beautiful handwriting. Unfortunately the postmark cancelation is illegible.
Those kinds writings are great….even if they're not considered extremely “rare”, they still probably add to historical knowledge of people and customs of that time. I'd be interested in hearing what the letters focus on.If I got a package of old letters what I would do is create a web site with images of the scanned in letters as well as the text written out. This way other people can find the letters, perhaps by doing a Google search for an obscure person that happens to be mentioned in one of the letters, or by searching for a small town mentioned therein. Other people can then comment on the letters and perhaps provide some insight.
Wow what a find! I think it would be neat to find letters like that from any era, but when they just happen to be from an ancestor that makes them even more valuable. It's like you are getting a letter from the past.
