A rule at a British golf club dating back to World War I was finally repealed recently. It's restriction? No Germans or Austrians….British golf club lifts WWI ban on Germans
It's amazing how things like that get pushed back and forgotten.
This makes me smile... the Canadians didn't wait as long to relax.Case in point; on my first trip north top a shooting event I met a former Panzer driver (with Rommel) and his shooting buddy an Irishman that flew with the RAF in the Battle of Britian.Hate the game not the player, eh?Wally
The article did say that a number of club members were killed in WWI, perhaps in the Battle of Verdun. If the news came all at once it could have devastated many of them at the club. I could see how this could cause people to get so angry that they would want to ban all Germans/Austrians at the club. But obviously, one generation's sentiments get lost over the decades to the point where people now wonder what the deal was in the first place. It's good to see that humanity has progressed to the point of forgiving and forgetting.

Sad news recently; Fritz passed away in October at 85. After a POW stint in the US went to the UK and then immigrated to Canada; served in the Canadian Militia driving Shermans in Alberta. The Greatest Generation weren't all Americans, eh? Or should it be yah?
I'm sorry to hear that he passed away. My condolences. It goes to show that national political differences that divide countries at one point in time can really be far removed from the differences (or lack thereof) between people. Two guys on opposite sides of the battlefield becoming shooting buddies….I bet that would not have happened at just any point in history. It's good to hear that it can happen in our day and age.
