Anybody every have a homemade popgun that shot chinaberries? I have mine from the 1940's and one of my uncles from the early 1900's. They were made of a foot long piece of straight elder. Elder has a pith down the center that can be pushed out to leave a hollow tube about 3/8″ diameter. This is the barrel. The handle (plunger) was whittled from hickory. (Mine was from an old wagon spoke. The plunger was about 1/2″ shorter than the barrel. The end of plunger was moistened and battered to make a good seal. A chinaberry was pushed from the rear to the front of the barrel. Another chinaberry inserted in the back and a rapid push shot the front one out with enough speed to make a welt on the victim. This was accompanied by a loud POP. (Usually followed by a butt kicking). The waxy chinaberry juice makes a nice polished bore in the barrel. My pop gun got me more fights and whippings than I can count.
I've never even heard of those. Sounds like a neat thing for boys to get themselves in trouble with though. ;D Lord knows My “jnventions got me in trouble more times then I care to remember.
