ParticipantI enjoyed reading this, and like the writers stated, there would be no possible way to fit the life of this man into a single, relatively brief article. I would like to say his name is probably known to every single American, but my guess is that is not true. What a shame, he was not only a great writer, but lead quite the interesting life as well.http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/apr2010/twai-a22.shtml

ParticipantI have read almost all of his short stories and all of his books, and most of his books more than once. He is one of the greatest writers America has ever produced.

ParticipantSotheby's is to auction a never-published tribute by Mark Twain to a woman – “In all things she was intense: in her this characteristic was not a mere glow, dispensing warmth, but a consuming fire.” Who was it?

ParticipantAlong the thread tree questions I heard this morning on the radio.1) To whom did Twain dedicate his first book and why?2) Twain made a load of money publishing Grant's autobiography. The second book he published was a bomb... who was the subject of that book?3) Twain was something of an inventor, in fact he had a patent for an improvement to a rather mundane item; what was the item he improved?

ParticipantAlong the thread tree questions I heard this morning on the radio.1) To whom did Twain dedicate his first book and why?
John Smith , "It is said that the man to whom a volume is dedicated, always buys a copy. If this prove true in the present instance, a princely affluence is about to burst upon." (1867) The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras Countyhttp://www.s4ulanguages.com/twain1.html
2) Twain made a load of money publishing Grant's autobiography. The second book he published was a bomb... who was the subject of that book?
(1868) General Washington's Negro Body-Servant
3) Twain was something of an inventor, in fact he had a patent for an improvement to a rather mundane item; what was the item he improved?
Samuel L. Clemens, born in Florida, Mo., received patent #121,992 on December 19, 1871 for an Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments. Twain patented three inventions, including an "Improvement in Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments" (to replace suspenders) and a history trivia game. Most commercially successful was a self-pasting scrapbook; a dried adhesive on the pages only needed to be moistened before use.http://www.uspto.gov/news/pr/2001/01-61.jsp

Participant1 and 3 are correct. Very good. #2 is Pope Leo XIII (clue should, btw, have read A second book… if this made the difference my apologies. Leo was in 1887 along with several other books that while forgotten today may have done better at the time.Mark Twain, Publisher
