I think I'm beginning to change my mind about this. I don't think it's catastrophic like we're all gonna die from it in 30 years, but I think there should be some concern.- Climate change is happening- CO2 has increased, so it is caused (at least partially) by man. What's made me have a change of mind about this is the effect on the ocean which is the main driver of global climate. Acidification worries me as does the higher than usual rise in CO2 levels in various ocean sites around the world. I agree with pretty much all this guy says in this article.(glad there is at least one school in Boston who haven't been completely taken over by the regressive Left)
There's been so much politicization of the issue that I think it's hard to separate fact from fiction/exaggeration. I think there are several issues to deal with:1) is the earth warming?2) is the earth warming because of man's activities?3) will #1 or #2 be harmful to man?4) if #2 is answered in the affirmative, is there anything we can do to stop it?So is #1 true? If so, what news is this? The earth used to be a molten mass when it was first formed. It later cooled. So shouldn't the earth's climate really be considered in the thousands, if not millions of years of climate history? And if the climate has cooled/warmed at all before the last 150 years or so, doesn't this raise the potential for the earth's climate to act independently of man's activities? Anyway, there are just so many people who want to dip into the trough of "climate change" as a means of establishing their own power bases that the whole thing makes me skeptical.
I'm just sick of reading anything about it other than good scientific papers. By good I mean not using overly emphatic words or dire warnings of doom.I think #1 is true. The avg temp has raised but not nearly as much as predicted in the first couple of IPCC reports. The earth has always had temperature changes, but science seems to confirm a higher amount of CO2 in the atmosphere which is caused by man and that's new. Is that bad? Yes. But whether or not it's as bad as they say is the key question. Since the ocean has a lot to do with climate, I strongly believe mankind has affected that with not only CO2, but all kinds of pollutants. There are some areas of the ocean with higher concentrations of CO2 and acidification which has affected some marine life. They are definitely studying it more than ever and with more advanced methods. Scientists may be making "new" findings but that doesn't mean it's never occured before.
I simply think it is arrogant in the extreme to think we can predict things that happen on geologic time-frames based on a little more than a century's worth of hard data. I also really wonder how accurate their tree ring and ice core measurements really are. We essentially have to take these guys (climate scientists and their ilk) at their word that they are in fact right and change much of what we do because of it with no prospect of ever knowing if they were really right in the first place. That is my biggest problem with the whole deal in a nutshell.
