    I realize this was an historical speech, but what exactly was its larger significance?  Did it have any direct effect on subsequent political developments in the U.S., Germany, or U.S.S.R.?

    Definitely more effective than JFK's Ich bin eine Berliner, for after that the wall lasted almost 28 more years. Stirring rhetoric that failed to stir.
