Interesting story here about the pirate Harry Paye who stole a cross from a church in Spain while he was there in the employment of a Spanish count around 1400. He lit two towns on fire and headed back to England. The Spanish understandably weren't pleased and followed him, burning the English town of Poole. The cross is apparently unaccounted for, but the town of Poole has decided to make the nice gesture by giving a new wooden cross to the Church of St Mary of the Sands, from which the original cross was stolen.Town returns Spanish cross stolen in 1400Interesting how these things play out. While it must have caused great havoc in the lives of the people who lived in the towns that were burnt down, it now provides a source of camaraderie and shared heritage.
