I am currently doing a paper which touches upon some architecture associated with Route 66, and I am trying to figure out the extent to which there is a Route 66 “revival” going on. I heard somewhere that Paul McCartney and his significant other recently took a Ford Bronco and drove the whole way, presumably for the experience. Anyone have any other information which may suggest Route 66 is becoming a place of cultural revival for this slice of Americana?
Actually I have been doing a little reading on it and it seems that preservation of “America's Road” has been going on gradually, and in parts, since at least the 1990s. It seems, though, that it's far too large to be completely protected/restored.
I know that the parts of Route 66 that run past my parents house in Oklahoma are being restored. They have even restored some of the hotels and burger stands to look like they did in the 50's.
For every restoration effort, though, there must be one of these sad stories about it going to waste:Landmark status eludes lost neon glory of Route 66 (May 2007)Incidentally, that article is about Oklahoma's portion of Route 66 and it says, "In Oklahoma, with more Route 66 miles than any of the eight states it flows through..."I didn't know that Oklahoma has the most route miles. From an image of the map, it seems like New Mexico or Arizona might have more, but I guess not.
