ModeratorWhere can I find a comprehensive list of Roman battles or battlefields in GB? I've been searching for a few days and have only come across a couple of them. There has to be more.I did find a lot of info on sites in Britain (roads, forts, walls, etc) but not too much on battlefields.

KeymasterI doubt this is comprehensive, and it includes battles fought in the early Middle Ages, but here's a source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Battles_involving_the_BritonsFor a comprehensive list I imagine you'd have to look in some published text dedicated to the subject.

ParticipantI don't think there were more than 20 or so Battles in Roman Britain really worthy of the name, if even that many. The biggest ones that come to my mind is the invasion by Caesar, the Boadicean Revolt, and the second invasion by Claudius. Here is another link: War in Roman Britain

That's what I was afraid of. If there were more major battles, I would think they would be well known. I'll just have to check out the things in Phid's link and see what they were all about, and if interesting, I'll visit it.I still prefer going to Greece, but I am worried (justifiably I think) about public transit strikes. Since I'll be relying on trains and buses heavily, a strike or shutdown wouldn't be good.

ParticipantRent a car in Greece, if you dont mind driving like a maniac. Even before the current conditions the public transit system was pretty chaotic. Think 3rd World country style. The Greek idea of work is my idea of relaxation.

ModeratorI was thinking of renting, but I don't even know if I would do that in GB. For some reason I keep thinking “how to screw an American” I was also thinking of some guided tour package package, but I don't know about that either.

ParticipantBefore you decide to go to Greece let me know. A friend of my wife has spent the last twenty years working in Greece every summer as a tour guide for one of the German travel companies. She can probably give you some tips on what companies to use to avoid getting cheated on travel accomodations and car rental. When we visited Greece two years ago, she got us a rental car for ?100 for a week.

ModeratorDid you drive around the Peloponnese? That looks mountainous, just wondering how the roads are.
March 2, 2011 at 2:26 pm #24203scout1067
ParticipantNo, I was on Corfu, which is plenty mountainous enough for me. We had a dinky little Fiat that barely fit on some of the roads. It was definitely an adventure, but worth it to see things that tours don't see.

ModeratorIf the things I want to see weren't so far from each other, I'd rent a bike.

ModeratorI should just go to Ireland. At least I know what I want to see there and where it is (generally).

ParticipantHeck, you can one of those Vespa Scooter things for about 15 a day in most places which would let you use buses for major movements and still be self propelled when you get where you are going. Believe me, walking up and down mountains or big hills all day gets old very quick.

KeymasterWhat ever happened to this trip, or to the status of finding Roman battlefields in Britain?Perhaps you should do the grrl power(!) Boudica tour of Britain.

Still in the thinking stage, but it will be likely. Since is this is mainly going to be a rugby trip, the closest thing to a battlefield will probably be Twickenham. A lot of things I want to see, including my ancestors' hometown (which is a must), Hadrian's Wall, the Roman ruins of Bath, and British Museum. It would be cool on my way to Logan, to stop at Plymouth, MA then go see Plymouth, England. Would that be considered a "pilgrimage?"

KeymasterMy impression was that Hadrian's Wall was quite far from London. More power to you, though, if you are able to make it.
