I found a web page which discusses the Bath School Disaster of the 1920s. It ranks as the worst school killings in our nation's history, and makes the point that school violence isn't confined to the modern-era.
what a tragedy. And to think he did that because of property taxes! The one thing I notice, is today it seems to be children killing children. But yes it seems to be something that has been with us longer than most people think.
I wanted to revive this topic in light of the recent shootings in Tucson. I think it's important to remember how these kinds of actions are not confined to the “modern political climate” or even to the use of guns.
The Tucson shootings are notable but the only reason they are notorious and is because of who the victim was. They are a perfect example of Rahm's oft repeated quote of “never let a crisis go to waste.” The political uproar surrounding the shootings is despicable and in my mind at least makes the democrats and liberals look even lower than they did before. The libs are rapidly approaching whale-crap status in my opinion and you can?t get lower than that because it is on the bottom of the sea.
The question had crossed my mind as well as to why all the media attention around this, when just as many people have been killed by gunmen in other episodes over the years. I think that yes, it must be because this involved an assassination attempt of a congresswoman. But I feel that there is more than that as well. While I don't like to be cynical about saddened people, it simply seems downright unreasonable to make some of the unfounded accusations that were being made, especially when the motive of the killer was still very unclear. I say “unreasonable” because some people – and the media promoted this as part of its narrative – took one potential motive out of countless potential motives and ran with it like it was a likely or sure thing. Now, even after that myth has pretty much been debunked, I am still seeing comments on stories which are still blaming people like Palin. All without a shred of causal evidence ever having been produced. In fact, can anyone recall any violence that has ever been committed after being incited by any conservative talk radio personality/pundit or politician?
The folks still blaming Palin or her remarks cannot be convinced otherwise. They suffer from Palin Derangement Syndrome as surely as anyone ever suffered from Bush Derangement Syndrome. They are the same type of people convinced that the CIA had Kennedy killed or that little green men abduct people and mutilate cows. The only bit of commentary about this whole sorry mess with the ring of truth to it is that there are nuts on the left and right. Ufortunately for the libs it appears this guy was just nuts with no political bent.
