Scopes went on trial for using this book, Civic Biology. At the time, it was the scientific “consensus” and much of it still is.Here's an excerpt from the chapter on evolution (pg. 196):
At the present time there exist upon the earth five races or varieties of man, each very different from the other in instincts, social customs, and, to an extent, in structure. These are the Ethiopian or negro type, originating in Africa; the Malay or brown race, from the islands of the Pacific; The American Indian; the Mongolian or yellow race, including the natives of China, Japan, and the Eskimos; and finally, the highest type of all, the caucasians, represented by the civilized white inhabitants of Europe and America. ...
Scopes is hailed as a hero to evolutionists.
That's interesting.I find it interesting when I see historical portrayals on TV or movies and certain figures are supposed to be "enlightened" (which inevitably means having modern-day liberal-like attitudes toward things). Curiously, we don't really see other, negative historical attitudes exhibited by those Hollywood heroes which they had. I would be surprised if Scopes were depicted in present-day movies with a racist attitude.
