I'm thinking this is geared more toward the tourists than the locals. That said, I can understand why the locals would be angry over the bar's opening:
Two Berliners have caused a stir with a new "Stasi Bar" where guests can sip beer surrounded by listening devices and shredded documents, a stone's throw from the former headquarters of East Germany's dreaded secret police.
I agree with you on both accounts. The owners have probably geared it towards tourists but knowing the history of the Stasi, the bar is a tasteless statement, IMO.
After 20 years we should change the way we talk about that topic
I think 20 years is too soon. I have no problem with Hitler-type things, but not this, not yet anyway. If the owners wanted to change the way they talk about it, there's better ways. There was enough culture in East Germans and they should go that route. But putting a manequin of an East German police officer at the front door ???
I would be interested in seeing that, being that I have an unhealthy interest in the Soviet/Warsaw Pact Cold War time period ;).I can see why residents of the former DDR would be pissed, though.
I am going to have to check this out the next time I go to Berlin. There was a great movie a few years ago called Goodbye, Lenin about an east German woman who woke up from a coma after the wall fell and the hoops her children went through to keep that fact hidden. Great movie, but it was only in German. I would recommend it to anyone.
