I saw this blog entry over at Scientific American:Why the heck does New York have steam pipes, anyway? The question arose because of the explosion a few days ago where sadly a person died. According to the article the steam is left over from a power plant - the kind of thing Manhattan has been doing since 1882 - and used as an energy source for other things. While the idea of this kind of system is not new it's evidently making a comeback with the rise in other power sources. The article also mentions that the particular pipe(s) that exploded (dating to 1924) was actually being used during the hot summer months to carry steam in order to power air conditioning systems in buildings in Manhattan.
