ParticipantDoes anyone really think the UN can be an honest broker anywhere in the world? I was reading this article today about the goings on in GazaUN official says Israel attacked during lull. What struck the most was this quote by Karen Abu Zayd, commissioner of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
"I think they saw that Hamas had observed the truce quite strictly for almost six months, certainly for four of the six months, and that they got nothing in turn ? because there was to be kind of a deal," Abu Zayd said
Just a few lines above this the AP points out that over 300 rockets had been fired at Israel during the truce. In what way is the firing of 300 rockets strictly adhering to a truce? And it is abvious from the tone of her comments that Ms. Abu Zayd is not an impartial purveyor of humanitarian aid. So again, Does anyone really think the UN can be an honest broker anywhere in the world? If so, can they please explain to me how they see this?

Moderator“I don't think they think the truce was violated first by Hamas,” she said.
Yeah. except for those rockets fired into Israel and the tunnels built into Egypt, is she saying Hamas did no wrong in breaking the truce? ::)
But at the same time, Israel appeared open to international pressure against an invasion, prying open its border with Gaza to allow deliveries of humanitarian aid.
What do they mean "appeared"?? Israel DID open the borders for humanitarian aid. If it didn't reach the people, then let's ask the Hamas
terrorists"government" about that.I like how she mentions it was a lull. I consider it more a surprise. I think starting the militay campaign on a Sabbath day (and during the Christmas holiday) even added to that surprise.December 30, 2008 at 11:49 am #14546scout1067
ParticipantWell, apparently Hamas is only engaged in Humanitarian work and only Israeli agents posing as terrorists are firing the rockets. As to it being the Sabbath-incorrect. Friday is the Muslim sabbath day and Saturday is the Jewish sabbath. Neither religion celebrates Christmas. I think the timing has more to do with the ending of the 6-month agreed truce. This lets Israel show that they hedl to the truce and Hamas did not.

ModeratorDidn't they start bombing on Saturday? Christmas was mentioned only in that the rest of the world was too busy to give it that much attention. Another element of surprise perhaps, we are in the middle of a transition as well as Israel. No one probably thought they'd do anything until after the administration(s) were in place.

ParticipantI thought they didnt start bombing until Sunday. What sickens me is the obvious bootlicking the UN envoy is apparently doing to the palestinians. Though, I can understand why she would since she lives in Gaza and probably wants to stay alive. I heard the UN secgen on the news today calling on the Israelis to stop their unprovoked agression against Gaza. It kills me, what do they think rockets into southern Israel are if not provocation. I guess the UN thinks like Europe, there is no right to self-defense.

ModeratorI read something today or yesterday that the UN humanitarians do not go into areas that are violent. They wait. What's the point of that? Don't people need assistance the most when there's violence happening around them?

ParticipantMaybe they dont want a repeat of Srebrenica where peacekeepers stood by while people were massacred. Now they just wait for the massacre to be finished and then go in.
