Here is an interesting article with some pictures of a dry American side of Niagara falls.  American engineers diverted the water in 1969 to examine the falls ans stabilize some of the underlying rock after two huge chunks of the falls broke off in 1965.  The pictures are interesting and just the engineering piece of diverting the water is pretty amazing if you ask me.
