This is a good question. I think that there's certainly the possibility from an historical perspective (or a certainty from a spiritual POV). I think that revivals probably happen all the time in different degrees in different regions…the question is whether there will be either one large, unifying awakening that occurs, or perhaps many awakenings which differ in nature but occur at the same time.
Given the regional and religious diversity of the US today, I have my doubts. The first and second GA's were responding to moral issues and social (political) at the same time. Hard to say, just have to wait ans see if anything will ignite the fervor again.
I believe America will always have great periods of revival. Historically it's occurred over and over again. There's no reason to believe that revivalism has petered out just yet. I see the likes of T.D. Jakes, Billy Graham, Robert Shuler, Oral Roberts, Charles Stanley, and many many others building large congregations and leading massive revivals all across the nation. America is a peculiar nation where revivalism is more cyclical than in other nations such as those of Europe. I'm not exactly sure as to why, but perhaps someone could compile a list of societal impulses that lead to revivals.

Check out Generations by Strauss and Howe... that should be just the ticket you are looking for. Terrific insight into the various generations of Americans... Boomers, Silents, Greatest (GI), etc. on back... what make 'em tick, motivations and all. Worth everyone's time, IMHO.Wally
America only want God's blessings, they don't want God. They don't want to love, serve Him like they should, anyway it was God's goodness that they were founded as nation. America probaly has one of the worst moral of any nation in the world even the ones that don't call themslves christians. Because they honor God with their lips but their hearts are far from Him.
Hey, America is not so bad! >:(But I agree that the morals are declining 🙁
As long as folks risk life and limb to get here we're okay. I'm also pretty sure these folks at least aren't all coming for sex, drugs, and rock and roll. We're still #1 when you consider any alternatives, eh? 😉Wally
We need a return to morals & Biblical principals desperately, imo. Right now, I'm very heated up in response to those girls who beat up that other girl and it was all video tape for the “heck of it”. Things such as this didn't happen when I was in school and definitely not when my parents were in school. Society is going downhill.
America is in the same position today as the 3rd and 4th century Roman Empire. A time of moral decay and relativism that leads to decadence and a decline in moral standards. Thoug America definitely needs a moral and spiritual revival, I dont know if another Great Awakening is in the cards. As a society it seems that we are rapidly beoming a people who are not willing to fight to defend ourselves or our posterity.
I've asked my daughters – both teenagers – what sets them apart from the other girls/kids who commit such mean acts of violence against others: both agree that as parents, my husband & I have provided a very stable environment; we've taught them morally & legally right from wrong and most importantly in their book, 3) my husband & I would never tolerate that type of behavior. We have preached there are consequences to a person's behavior and no matter what age a person is, that person must take responsibility.

My wife and I have done the same with our son. He is a much better kid than I ever was. Of course, I have three brothers and my son is an only child so it is harder for him to get away with stuff than it was for me. But I still have son I can be proud of and I am sure he will grow into a man I can be proud of as well. It is all about parenting, as you allude to.
Hasn't the completely blown out of proportion “separation of Church and State” issue contributed greatly to our moral decline? The 1st Amendment wasn't written to remove God from politics or the public sector, but it sure seems to be interpreted that way by many nowadays.

I think this contributes to the breakdown in the sense that an accepted "civic" morality has been adopted which has as its maxim that religion and government should be completely separate. This, of course, is not in line with the views of the Founding Fathers. In adopting this view, particularly in education, state authority and duty have become "sanitized" and divided from religious authority. I think there are other reasons for the moral decline. The morphing of the nation into an "entitlement state"; distorted concepts of fundamental concepts such as "rights"; and apathy due both to economic prosperity and sustained domestic peace.Notice these last two are things which are almost always considered to be goals of society, and rightly so. But the down side of both successful capitalism and peace is that lessons are sometimes forgotten and things are taken for granted. Remember in those days immediately following 9-11 when there was a surge of patriotism, when people tended to group together while squabbles were put on the shelf? That was a great feeling, but it eventually wore off. I'm afraid that without such a threat to peace or to one's bank account people don't take life seriously...and then the decline follows.
