ParticipantI am just back from a train trip(S.A.M. Shortline) to Savannah Ga. Unfortunately the weather was awful so our tour of the historical district was not what I would have liked. One interesting fact on the tour was that James Edward Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder, was only 4' 11" tall and the Yamacraw chieftain,Tomochichi, was 7' tall. They must have been the original "Odd Couple". Supposedly Tomochichi was fascinated by Ogletorpe's flaming red hair. Apparently they were best of friends since Tomochichi accompinied Oglethorpe back to England to meet the King. The S.A.M. Shortline RR is state supported and normally runs weekly from Cordele Ga to Plains and Archery because of Pres Carter. The Savannah excursion is once a year.

ParticipantI visited the historical district in Savanah some years ago, down on the waterfront. What a beautiful city! I'm glad Sherman spared it.

KeymasterI have heard that as well – that Savannah is a beautiful city. I've never been to Georgia aside from the Atlanta airport (does that count? 😀 ).

ParticipantAtlanta DOES NOT count ! Please don't judge the rest of us by Atlanta. I will drive 100 miles to avoid Atlanta. It is inhabited by rude people who are totally different from the rest of the state.

ParticipantEvery state has a city the residents are terrified the rest of the country are going to judge them by. Ours is Portland.

ParticipantI'm originally from California myself, Redding which is northern CA. And we just lumped all of Southern Cal in one basket, I remember when they voted to split the state in half.

ParticipantChico here… yes, while SoCal is the land of extremes in many ways my hometown rivals it… illegal to process much less detonate a thermonuclear device (at least w/in the city limits) 😐Oh well... then stuff would glow in the dark; not cool, eh?Cheers,Wally in Chico (where the nuts come from)
