News is out that Tom Cruise will star in the sequel to Top Gun. Given the changes in the Air Force since the original was made back around 1986, it will be interesting to see how the movie reflects the contemporary world. Here's a clue:
Tom Cruise is set to return in the starring role as a test pilot for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter — a plane that could well be the last manned fighter aircraft made in the West.

I don't see pilots coming out of cockpits anytime soon as the tagline for the film seems to suggest.
How often do air-to-air combat pilots see action these days?
I think the last US air-to-air combat took place in the mid 90's enforcing the No-Fly Zone in Iraq. The Last Ace is an article about a US pilot who got three kills in Iraq in 1991. I know there was no aerial combat in Iraq or Afghanistan during the current wars.
Kind of puts Tom Cruise's character in an odd spot, then, doesn't it? It just wouldn't be the same if the movie were about some hot shot bomber pilot…
I wonder who's going to play the blonde Bimbo, you know the one who makes the guys enthusiastic to enrol ?
