He returns over 60 years later to apologize for bombing the city of Bath during the war in the “Baedeker raids”.German Luftwaffe pilot returns to Bath to apologise for wartime bombingInteresting and rather touching for him to do this. Decorated military career as well.
Herr Schludecker flew 120 flights over Russia, England and the Balkans during the war when the average life expectancy of a German pilot was just seven raids. He survived being shot down nine times.
Glad to see him able to do this before he dies.
I think this is good for him to do this, but was it really necessary? To play the role of unbiased, non-apologetic historian here, has any British pilot ever apologized for bombing Dresden? (Which killed like tens of thousands of civilians)

The thought of necessity had crossed my mind as well when I initially started reading it. Soldiers on the "right" side of battles still kill civilians unintentionally as well. It's a good question as to whether any Allied pilots/soldiers felt compelled to apologize as well, or if the knowledge of battling against Hitler was moral justification enough. I'm guessing the latter is the case.
