ModeratorBut wouldn't ice balls be more effective?

No, because they don't come out as long as the ground is frozen. As soon as it starts to thaw they go to town though.Yes, I plan on putting up a video of it in action.

ParticipantI finally have it put together and it thawed enough to take it outside and fire it. I am still putting the video together but below is a picture of my Trebuchet and the crew.

KeymasterThat's looking pretty good so far. Did you find instructions on the design on the internet somewhere, or have you just been tweaking it according to trial and error?

ParticipantIt was a kit, but there were no instructions, only a picture of the finished product.

KeymasterHave you tested it out yet? I think I know the answer to that already. What kind of distance have you been getting from it?
March 11, 2013 at 7:27 pm #28040scout1067
ParticipantThe farthest I have gotten is with the max weight and a marble (what we called a thumber when I was a kid). That one went about 40 feet but the average is closer to 25-30 feet. It is still too cold to spend too much time playing with it outside and my wife forbade me from shooting it in the house, even with marshmallows. :'( The biggest problem is I cant shoot gravel because the sling releases incorrectly if the projectile is not round. 🙁

ParticipantOK everybody. Below is the video of building and firing my Trebuchet. My dog also does a cameo. The video was put together for class so excuse the million transitions and other assignment requirements. The light is kind of weird on the outside shots too because it was one of those weird weather days for the outside shoot but one I had to take because it was also one of the few days we have had recently without inches of snow cover.

KeymasterThat was pretty good. So was the lego castle about 30 feet away when you fired? Also, how many takes did you have to do before you finally hit the target?

ParticipantI felt like I was watching an episode of The Woodwright's Shop LOL. Very well done.

ModeratorThe dog's reaction and following slo-mo were totally necessary to show the sheer terror of the trebuchet. Cool video! Interesting music. Have you put a dog biscuit in there yet?
