I can't see that there is 'an' answer: surely this is a value-judgement, to which one could as easily reply 'Scotland' or even (at the end) 'The Empire'?

By all means, we welcome the trivia questions. You may write them up in whichever way you'd like. They are great for starting discussions. 🙂

ParticipantThe answer I was thinking of is France. It seems obvious, I know. I wanted to see if anyone would come up with another answer. Like stated above, this question can be arguable. Therefore, I'll make up another one within the next few days. Hopefully it will be more challenging (is anything challenging for you guys? :P).

ParticipantWhat about Spain? Spain was just starting to come into great power and her Maritime activities could arguably be seen as a threat to British Dominance of the near waters of Europe or at least as a potential future threat.

ParticipantHenry VIII had a policy of trying to play France against Spain (although that's an oversimplification of what happened). If you counted how many years France was his enemy and how many years Spain was his enemy you'd get the answer. My bet is on France.

The Church (the Pope)

ParticipantThat is a good one, I had not thought of that. An argument could certainly be made that as far as Henry was concerned the Church was an existential threat to his realm.

ParticipantHenry VIII generally gets a good press, but he was a high maintainence monarch. He certainly didn't go in for balanced budgets. He also left a very precarious dynastic situation. We all know things turned out okay, but that wouldn't have been obvious at the time. You could argue that he was the biggest threat to the state he presided over.
