Since the 1980s, American grocery habits have really only changed in the purchase of two food types.How Has American Grocery Shopping Changed in the Past 30 Years?
I know I eat lots of tasty meat. Matter of fact, we are grilling steaks tonight. Ah, Ribeye, I can't wait.
As I recall from going to the grocery store in Austria, processed foods are also popular over there and in the rest of Europe (though perhaps not quite as much as in the U.S.?). I assume that the trend toward processed foods, and away from the purchase of raw meats, is due to both cost and convenience. I know that I am guilty of this. Do the math, and it costs much less to buy a bag of precooked Walmart meatballs (which are actually quite good) than to buy the ingredients separately and make them from scratch.However, few cooking experiences beat grilling a steak in the summertime. I don't know about Austria but the part of Germany I live in has plenty of Butcher shops. My favorite one slaughters their own animals out back and the meat is always fresh. The prices are fairly reasonable too, at least on pork and some beef. Whole cuts of beef are pricey and both Chicken and Turkey are unbelievably expensive. I tend to buy most of my whole cuts, especially steak, at the local US base because it is generally 50% cheaper than on the economy.
