What kind of people would do this?'Vandals have hacked at the heart of Christianity': 2,000-year-old Holy Thorn Tree of Glastonbury is cut downTake a look at the sidebar toward the bottom of the article for a brief history of the tree. It was believed to have been brought to Scotland by Joseph of Arimathea and had been cut down in the past while the roots had been saved. I wonder if they will replant the tree this time around as well. I think they should, if they can.
It seems that we have come a long ways in improving racial, sexual and age discrimination. However, discrimination against religion seems to be getting worse. Now, I oppose religion being forced on anyone, and I don't agree with some religious practices, but I find it hard to understand why this movement seems to be growing.
I'm not sure if this was specifically done out of animus toward religion, or just out of disrespect in general. In other words, perhaps they simply did it more because they knew it was a beloved tree, rather than because it was a beloved tree attached to Christianity. I don't know. I hope they catch the perps.
According to the story that are other trees raised from the original elsewhere in town. Perhaps it can be replaced by a cutting from one of these other trees.
