Should the Confederacy have at any time attempted to take and hold Washington regardless of the cost, and if so what might the likely outcome have been?
During the Civil War the city of Washington DC was the most heavily fortified and defended city in the world. If it could have been taken that gambler R.E. Lee would have certainly tried.
