Should the Confederacy have at any time attempted to take and hold Washington regardless of the cost, and if so what might the likely outcome have been?
During the Civil War the city of Washington DC was the most heavily fortified and defended city in the world. If it could have been taken that gambler R.E. Lee would have certainly tried. In 1864 Jubal Early made a feint at Washington to relieve pressure on Lee and actually got to the outskirts of the city. One of my G-grandfathers was in Early's army and was wounded in that fight
