When I summarize, I will ignore strictly moralistic posts. They failed to fully mobilize until so late that they couldn't make a difference in the outcome of the war. One good example is war material output, especially weapons. The south never did fully rationalize weapons production leaving them dependent on blockade runners to make up deficiencies in their small arms equipment. This complicated logistics as they were unable to standardize one caliber and had as many as 8 different calibers of weapon in some field armies.
