Everybody's hitting all of the old classics (yes, I think Pvt Ryan may fit that category).I recently watched "Letters from Iwo Jima" on DVD, and personally, I think it is one of the best war movies ever made. It's not action / shoot-em up, but in my humble opinion it does a better job of portraying men in combat than any other movie I've ever seen.Someone mentioned Korean War movies -- don't forget "Pork Chop Hill" with Gregory PeckOther WWII movies not yet mentioned:Cross of Iron -- James CoburnHell is for Heroes -- Steve McQueenHell to Eternity -- if you can get over Jeffery Hunter playing Guy Gabaldon (Gabaldon is a pint sized hispanic -- not a 6 foot handsome leading man!) Okay, great story, cheesy movie.
I read the book, “Letters from Iwo Jima and I want to see the movie."Pork Chop Hill" - man, I'd forgotten about that one! It's been eons since I've seen it.
Patton is an excellent movie. I remember my older brother rushing to the theatre to see it.
Might be a bit late but if he would simply have waited he could have rented it on DVD. But I agree that it's a good movie...one of the best WWII movies (or any movie for that matter) of all time. I think I watched it the summer when I tried to rent a bunch of AFI top 100 movies of all time or whatever.
“Tora Tora Tora” was a good film, combat sequences were well done."Midway", well, it was OK< kinda cheezy love story got in the way, but Charleton Heston is Da Man!Another early Steve McQueen flick is "The War Lover", as a psychopath bomber pilot, with a very young Robert Wagner as his co-pilot and rival."Casablanca" is just timeless. the 2 DVD set is worth the extra $$.I watched "Saving Private Ryan", but it's too much to watch twice. Still a great movie.
The two best have to be “Sands of Iwo Jima” Because it's a classic and “Kelly's Heroes”. Telly Savalas was outstanding in Kelly's Heroes. For realism probably “Saving Private Ryan”
