He gets a pretty mediocre rating at Ratemyprofessor: http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1184612The end of course survey comes out from Dr. McCluskey - the Provost - but don't be misled. The survey is run by an outside organization that provides consolidated feedback, thus keeping student identity separate. My opinion, nothing will get better, and mediocre professors will continue to teach unless we (as students) tell it like it is -- that doesn't mean escalating petty issues, but if you don't fee that your professor is putting effort into the course or not taking it seriously, run him/her up the flagpole. These aren't tenure track professors, so they need to step up to the plate or get canned.I happen to know that there are some changes coming about with some AMU professors - a low level of tolerance for those who don't take their obligations to the students seriously. Not to say that they're cleaning house, but they do have a progressive engagement system and those that don't measure up are put on a corrective action plan or canned.
I don't want to sound smug or Ivory Tower, but if you want to upgrade your professors, the only way you are going to do that is to attend a rank one research institution where the top researchers are employed.

You mean like those well-reknowned Marxist professors from the left-wing prestigious university known as Brown?
Yes, AMU is cleaning house. The professor in one of the two courses I am currently taking apparently got fired because about week 10 of a 16 week course we got a new professor after the previous one had been MIA for about a month. I encourage you to beat him up in the end-of-course survey, especially if he is not covering the subject completely and only focusing on one aspect. I will say that based on my experience with Prof. Carey, you will enjoy his class even though he tends to make you do a lot of work. His exams are especially fun and all-encompassing, they took me about 3-4 hours of solid work.
I had Carey for Intro to WC and he was very intensive. He's also the one I spoke with on the phone about the independent studies class. He'll be teaching the Ancient and Medieval Warfare courses I have to take. Can't wait. VERY good professor!

So the professor just disappeared part way into the course? That's really, really odd.
Choose another major … where you can feel better and unchallenged ! Otherwise you have to deal with your professor, History is a social science after all, made by and with people, bad or good 😉
yes, Aeth, that's what it's all about. ::) Read more carefully, you'll see it is the QUALITY of the professor that is in question and the fact that he IS NOT challenging me that is in question. He's unfocused and inconsistant. All 3 of these have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not I agree with him on issues. It has more to do with my having a high interest in this period and being disappointed he's not covering topics in depth. The issue here is he is not a good professor.
I have to admit, I went through this when I was in seminary. I got frustrated with the mediocrity of the faculty (not their fault as they were pastors by trade and not scholars), so I quit and returned to the university. I would ask them questions and they didn't know the answers, so then I asked them questions that I knew the answer and they still didn't know. After that I had had enough.
If you're talking to me, Phid, that class was over a few months ago. I ended up with an A-, gave him a poor rating on ratemyprofessor and will avoid him like the plague. He teaches a Renaissance course I'll be taking soon. Sure glad he's not the only instructor!
Well I was recommended by a good friend of mine to check out ratemyprofessor website and I used this when there were multiple classes offered by different professors to decide which would suit me best. Of course a lot of the bad ratings may come from those students that are e-raging but I found that some profs had hundreds of ratings so the average when compared with the 'measuring stick' school professor average was somewhat helpful. May be too late for that now for you but something to consider for the future.

My advice would be to take that site with a big grain of salt. Not only could students be e-raging on the site, but if you look at how ratings are set up, easiness = higher ratings. I think many of us here would agree that the ease of a class by no means = "better professor". I also have a big issue with the "hotness" rating on the site. I know they do it "just for fun" but there's something that really irks me when students are asked to rate scholars who have spent many years laboring in their respective fields on something like physical attractiveness. That said, I have used the site myself to research professors who I wanted to work under for my Phd program, and also colleagues of mine who teach a course I will be teaching soon. It gives me a glimpse of some potential issues, but no real certainty. I realize that unless we know more about the student giving a rating, that rating is really unreliable. There are many "slacker" students out there, and I'm sure many childish students as well. If a slacker student says a professor is "horrible!", what does tell us more about the professor or about the student giving the rating? Anyway, I have arrived at the conclusion that there is no way a professor can please everyone all the time.
I find that the comments on ratemyprofessor are the only things that are even marginally useful. Even then, you have to be skeptical. I typically try to find out if anyone I know has taken a class with the professor, I think I get a better understanding that way than any other method.

That is so true - the comments are the most helpful aspect of the site, but even then they should be taken as biased opinion. Reading the comments there is like reading an ancient Greek historian...while there may only be grains of truth scattered about, it's still neat to see how one group of people thinks about another group of people.
