Phid, as a Catholic what is your opinion of the rapture? I thought Catholic doctrine says that Antiochus Epiphanes fulfilled the prophecies of the abomination of desolation which would mean there is no future Antichrist or Rapture etc… Is this correct?
Honestly, I am really not versed in "rapture" theology. Actually, I think that Catholics don't actually use the word rapture so much as Protestants do. I read up a bit on the precise Catholic position and it does not seem to be much clearer, other than the fact that Catholics hold more or less to the "amillennialist" position - the same as St. Augustine. This view also *seems* to leave certain interpretations open; by comparison, it seems to me that some of the Protestant views on the rapture interpret events quite specifically in light of Scriptural passages.BTW I am drawing a blank on Antiochus Epiphanes.
It's no big deal. Antiochus was a Seleucid king who sacked Jerusalem in his war with the Maccabees and entered the Holy of Holies where he placed a statue of Zeus in place of the Mercy Seat. It was the ultimate act of blasphemy in the minds of Jews and was Antiochus's way of saying “you're beaten now give up.”
