An interestring question posed this week was, which colony/country benefited most from the native population in colonial warfare?I said it was the French mainly because (1) they had better relations with the Indians than the British did (2) they took the Indians' advice when it came to guerilla tactics (3) the lesser population of the French posed less a threat tot he natives than the British did, so the natives were more willing to help the French. I had a few more, but that's it in a nutshell.Thought?
Agreed.Add: since the French were more concerned with exploitive trade than settlement they treated the Amerinds more like partners (clients, if you will) than the roadblock that the English saw.
You have summed it up quite well, I think. For the most part the French tried to get along with the natives in most of their colonies except Algeria that I am aware. They did not really run into colonial problems until they tried to reestablish themselves in their colonies after WWII and we all know how those endeavors turned out.
