One of my co-workers made the defining statement on the matter; his take was, no matter, the winner would be a one term President... another Carter, good man but overcome by the depth of the situation. I agree.
It took the country 8 years and one of our greatest presidents to overcome the damage done to this nation by the Carter administration and that was in peacetime. I don't think the country is in a position to entertain another idiot in the White House for four years. As to Carter being a good man, he may well be, (I disagree and think he is a flake) but it tooks more than good intentions to lead a nation of 300,000,000 people. He did not then, and still doesn't have the depth of character required to be a mediocre president, much less a good one.
Whoa… didn't say he wasn't as flakey as a box of Post Toasties… or that he was a man of extreme depth of character. He did, however, try (w/o much success) to live up to the job at hand. Same will likely be said about Obama, or McCain had he won.
Carter tried to micromanage the White House and in the end he just got in the way of his people. Obama surely is not dumb enough to try to run everything by himself without listening to his advisors.
I get the strange feeling that Obama will “rule” (to borrow a recently-used word) in the vein of Clinton. That is, he will be paying attention to opinion polls, focus groups, and the political center-left in order to keep his own support high. He will also use his press secretary to spin quite frequently to maintain public support. This will be both good and bad for conservatives. Government will move to the left but it will not go as far left as many liberal principles would demand.

Which is why we will get more screwed up in a relatively short period of time. Just as you can't mix a "little" socialism in with capitalism (because it just won't work), you can't mix a "little" Right into Leftist ideology. There will be no choice but to allow, via Democrats and the press, the MASTER OF THE WHITE HOUSE (another borrowed term) to get his way.
Only the next 4 years will show us what kind of President Obama will be. I for one, donot have a lot of confidence in the abilities or priorities of the next administration.
