Ran across this today and thought immediately that I would love to have one of these in my backyard. Kaboom! Blitzer Railgun Completes First Successful Test Firing . Now can anyone think of a better use of our defense research dollars than railguns? It is like something straight out of a sci-fi novel or Halo3.
What's interesting is that the idea has been floating around in one form or another for 90 years. I agree that the railgun is pretty cool, as are a lot of state-of-the-art military tech advancements we see from time to time. Personally, I may have a tough time working on a team for a defense contractor which comes up with these kinds of inventions, which are basically ways to kill people more easily. I realize that the nature of man, and of evolving militaries, requires people to do this, but IMO there's something very uneasy about it….
I dont know, I am all about coming up with ways to kill my nations enemies more efficently. Spectacular ways are just icing on the cake and make the show better. Maybe I am lucky that I dont have a lot of moral qualms about killing enemies. (I am sure fit would have ablast with this if I posted it to CL) ;DBesides, Railguns are just cool and I want one.
I think that it may be different for a person working in the military, compared to a civilian working on weapons systems. I had the opportunity to do some legal work related to a defense contractor a few years ago in Washington D.C., and so I saw quite a few files and communications regarding what they do there. I just feel it would be weird to have a job where you have your morning coffee, kiss your wife goodbye in the morning, and drive from the burbs to the downtown office and think first thing at work, “How can I make it even more efficient to have this projectile pierce armor so that it turns human flesh behind it into Swiss cheese at a cost that ultimately adds to my corporation's bottom line?” I think that in the military it's probably different since your task is much more noble and its nature is decidedly different from that of a corporation. Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this thread into a "feelings" discussion of this sort. I do realize that the nature of war means that some people will have the necessary task of determining how to most effectively kill people.
